Frequently Ask Questions

What does workplace culture research actually measure?

Workplace culture research measures the employee experience across dimensions including trust, fairness, camaraderie, pride, and credibility in leadership. Great Place To Work® uses its Trust Index™ survey methodology, developed over 30+ years, to benchmark these dimensions across industries, company sizes, and demographics. The result is quantitative data on how people actually feel at work, not how organisations say they operate.

Our data comes directly from employees via the Trust Index™ survey, completed anonymously. We survey across 600+ Australian organisations each year, capturing responses from entry-level to senior leadership.

Our most recent national research identifies trust in leadership, psychological safety, and wellbeing as the primary drivers of employee experience in Australian workplaces. Organisations that score highly on these dimensions consistently outperform industry peers on retention, engagement, and productivity. Our annual Best Workplaces™ report and industry-specific publications track how these trends shift year on year.

Employee engagement typically measures motivation and discretionary effort. Employee experience is broader: it captures the full reality of working at an organisation, including fairness, inclusion, belonging, and trust in leadership. Great Place To Work® research measures employee experience using the Trust Index™ framework, which goes beyond engagement scores to reveal the cultural conditions that drive or undermine performance.
