Fun in the workplace isn’t just about after-hours drinks or Friday games. It’s a strategic element that fosters collaboration, enhances engagement, and drives productivity. Companies that prioritise fun as part of their culture consistently see better business outcomes and happier teams. Two exceptional examples of this are Be Challenged and Carlisle Homes, both recognised as Great Place to Work-certified organisations.

Be Challenged: Turning Teamwork into Play

Be Challenged recognise the significant value that fun can bring to a workplace, in the form of stronger relationships, greater fulfillment, increased creativity and innovation and higher retention. The company specialises in team-building experiences that bring people together through creative, interactive challenges. With a 94% employee agreement that “This is a fun place to work” and a perfect 100% score for “Taking everything into account, I would say this is a great place to work,” it’s clear that Be Challenged doesn’t just talk the talk, they live it.

The company’s programs are a testament to their ethos. From escape rooms to creative problem-solving activities, their offerings are designed to inject energy and camaraderie into the workplace. Internally, Be Challenged mirrors the same values they deliver to clients, fostering an environment where creativity thrives, and teams feel connected. The result? Employees who are not only productive but also genuinely enjoy coming to work each day.

Carlisle Homes: Building Joy Alongside Homes

For Carlisle Homes, a leader in the home-building industry, fun is woven into their culture just as seamlessly as quality is into their homes. A striking 93% of their employees agree that “This is a fun place to work,” matching their equally high score for “Taking everything into account, I would say this is a great place to work.”

Carlisle Homes achieves this by embracing a holistic approach to employee well-being. Their focus on collaboration, personal growth, and inclusivity creates a workplace where individuals feel valued and inspired. For example, Carlisle’s celebratory events and team activities build strong connections, while their commitment to recognising employee achievements fosters pride and motivation. It’s a place where serious work meets light-hearted moments, creating a balanced and fulfilling work environment.

A Partnership Rooted in Fun

Recently, Be Challenged and Carlisle Homes joined forces to deliver a team-building initiative, showcasing how organisations can use their strengths to create meaningful and memorable employee experiences. Be Challenged contributed their expertise in designing dynamic activities, while Carlisle Homes brought their commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace culture. Together, they crafted a program that resonated deeply with participants.

Be Challenged ran their Flat out F1 program for 500 Carlisle Homes staff during their town hall in November 2024. Flat out F1 involves teams constructing life-sized Formula One cars using a wooden chassis and other materials and blueprints provided to them. Once the cars are completed, teams compete in a championship race to crown an overall winner.

Sara Garvey, P&C Business Partner at Carlisle Homes, shared her perspective on the event:

“Our annual ‘We Are Carlisle Day’ is all about bringing our team together to connect, reflect, and celebrate our achievements. True to our value of ‘A little fun every day,’ and with Be Challenged’s dynamic and engaging approach, the day was full of energy and showcased the skills at the heart of Carlisle’s success: clear communication, seamless collaboration, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.”

This collaboration demonstrates how aligning values and goals between organisations can amplify the impact of workplace initiatives, fostering stronger teams, enhancing communication, and building lasting relationships.

Why Fun Matters in the Workplace

Fun at work isn’t a distraction; it’s a driver. Research shows that employees who enjoy their work environment are more engaged, less likely to leave, and more innovative. By integrating fun into the workplace, companies like Be Challenged and Carlisle Homes tap into the human need for connection and joy, turning ordinary tasks into extraordinary experiences.

Moreover, a culture of fun helps build resilience and fosters a sense of belonging, key factors in navigating today’s fast-changing work landscape. Employees who laugh together work better together, building stronger teams and achieving higher levels of performance.

And fun at work isn’t just a perk, it’s a form of happiness. In positive psychology, happiness includes both joy (hedonic happiness) and meaning (eudaimonic happiness). Research shows that happier employees are 12-20% more productive, depending on which study you look at.

When workplaces encourage fun, they create an environment that elevates hedonic happiness. As a result, people perform better and enjoy their work more

Expanding the Definition of Fun

Workplace fun doesn’t have to involve grand gestures. It can be as simple as creating a space for employees to share a laugh, offering flexible schedules that allow them to pursue personal passions, or celebrating achievements in creative ways. According to BU Happiness College, organisations that incorporate fun into their culture report measurable improvements in employee satisfaction and overall performance.

Fun can temporarily lift moods, but the effects don’t last if it’s just about momentary pleasure. When workplaces combine fun with purpose, like team bonding, creative challenges, or volunteering, the benefits stick. Employees don’t just feel good in the moment; they feel more fulfilled long-term.

Think of workplace happiness like a great meal, fun is the spice, but meaning and connection are the main ingredients. Companies that balance both don’t just create happy workplaces; they create places where people want to stay, grow, and succeed.

Fun also acts as a social glue, strengthening relationships between colleagues. In high-stress industries or roles, moments of levity can act as a release valve, reducing burnout and creating a more supportive work environment.

Lessons for Other Organisations

For companies seeking to emulate these successes, the takeaway is clear: fun is serious business. It starts with leadership that values culture as much as strategy. Whether it’s team-building initiatives, celebrations of success, or creating spaces for organic connection, the key is to prioritise authenticity. Fun shouldn’t feel forced; it should reflect the organisation’s unique character.

As the experiences of Be Challenged and Carlisle Homes demonstrate, workplaces that invest in fun reap the rewards of happier, more engaged, and more productive teams. The numbers speak for themselves, and the smiles are the proof.

Incorporating fun into the workplace isn’t just a strategy; it’s a philosophy that drives connection, creativity, and success.
