KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Australia’s best tech workplaces are engineering culture with visible career paths and structured learning budgets.
  • The top-ranked companies are introducing AI as a human co‑pilot, not a competitor.
  • Organisations that build high‑trust, purpose‑driven environments are dramatically reducing preventable turnover.

In an industry where replacing one technical professional costs about 80 per cent of their annual salary and turnover hovers around 24 per cent, bad culture gets expensive fast.

So what separates the tech companies people stay at from the ones they endure until a recruiter slides into their LinkedIn DMs?

Great Place To Work surveyed thousands of employees at technology companies across Australia to produce the Best Workplaces in Technology 2026 list.  Here are the top five tech company culture best practices from the companies whose own people rated them the highest.

1. Build career pathways people can see from their desks

The fastest way to lose a good engineer is to leave them guessing about what comes next. At Luminary, every employee gets a $4,000 annual training budget for external certifications, paired with weekly team-led sessions and cross-discipline mentorship. The company’s Marketing Specialist Claire Dunton says the payoff is real, “Multiple former interns now hold permanent, full-time positions.”

V2 AI pushes further with $5,000 in annual learning funding, five days of study leave, and bonuses up to $20,000 via a gamified Leaderboard. At Codex, every team member has a dedicated Career Lead. “This creates space for meaningful development conversations tailored to the individual,” says Chief People Officer, Megan Waldon.

2. Roll out AI with humans in lead not in the loop

Every company on the 2026 list is integrating AI. Not one of them led with the technology, they all led with their people. Mantel Group (running AI consulting since 2017) gives employees access to a secure AI Gateway with multiple models and a monthly experimentation budget. The return is 75 per cent less manual effort on Statements of Work.

At HiBob, CEO messaging explicitly framed AI as “do more with more.” Talent Acquisition Lead, Stella Nightingale explains. “We have intentionally positioned AI as a co-pilot, not a competitor.”

Carsales introduced agentic AI through a town hall, structured four-week problem sets, then a rotating Friday demo where teams showcased what worked and what didn’t. Executive general Manager Chloe Fast says, “This has been invaluable in normalising both success and failure.”

Phased rollout, psychological safety to fail, visible leadership commitment and a clear message that the technology works for people.

3. Make trust the operating system

The Great Place To Work Trust Index measures workplace trust across credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie. Companies earning Certification score 65 per cent or above. FTSE Russell research shows that Fortune 100 Best Companies have outperformed the stock market by a factor of three over 28 years. What does it look like in practice? At Adora, every employee gets six nights annually at an off-grid cabin and three paid days to use them. A bell rings at noon and the whole company eats lunch together. Diane Villavieja says: “We optimise for the person. Productivity takes care of itself.”

At Mantel Group, five core principles replace traditional policies and their My Deal program lets employees tailor their own annual work plan.

4. Give people genuine permission to fail

Luminary calls it a “fail and learn” philosophy. Claire Dunton explains: “By framing new tech as an experimental playground rather than a high-stakes performance metric, we remove the anxiety of perfection.”

Carsales built an entire ecosystem around safe experimentation with TryAI for tool trials, monthly AI Expert Series showcases, and a dedicated three-day AI Hackathon. A1 Technologies, who placed #1 in this year’s micro category, take a structured path with their Kaizen Awards recognise staff who design practical improvements to workflows and automations. Marketing Director Katie Rattray says that, “People are encouraged to fix problems properly, not work around them.”

In workplaces where 42 per cent of voluntary turnover is considered preventable, psychological safety is a retention strategy with a dollar sign attached.

5. Connect every role to the bigger picture

At Ansarada, company-wide OKRs connect every individual to the strategy. People & Culture Business Partner Maria Dang says they bring it to life through “bold annual themes, launch days, team call cries. People know exactly how their work contributes, which builds both confidence and pride.”

Causeis makes the link direct: their work advances associations across health, education and professional standards. “Our people see a direct connection between their work and real-world outcomes,” says Founder John Lelempsis.

The companies topping Australia’s Best Workplaces in Technology 2026 are not relying on perks or slogans, they are engineering cultures with the same rigour they apply to their products. They make growth visible, treat AI as a human amplifier, operationalise trust, and design environments where experimentation is expected, not penalised.

In a market where nearly a quarter of the workforce turns over each year and replacing a single employee can cost up to 80 per cent of their salary, these are economic imperatives. The organisations that get this right are not just retaining talent, they are compounding it. And in a sector defined by speed and scarcity, that is the ultimate competitive advantage.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes tech company culture different from other industries?

Tech culture faces unique pressures: rapid tooling changes (especially AI), fierce competition for specialised skills, and annual turnover around 24 per cent. Replacing a technical professional costs roughly 80 per cent of their salary. The best tech workplaces respond with structured learning budgets, psychological safety to experiment with new tools, and transparent communication about change. Great Place To Work’s Trust Index survey measures these dynamics across credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie.

How do top tech companies introduce AI without creating anxiety?

Australia’s Best Workplaces in Technology 2026 share a consistent approach: phased rollout starting with pilot groups, leadership that explicitly frames AI as augmentation rather than replacement, dedicated experimentation budgets so employees can trial tools safely, and peer-led knowledge sharing through internal showcases and demo sessions. The companies with the highest adoption rates involve employees in shaping how AI is used from day one rather than imposing it from the top down.

What is the most effective way to improve tech employee retention?

Research shows 75 per cent of voluntary turnover is preventable through better management and culture practices. The highest-impact interventions are visible career pathways with funded development, manager capability building, and structured employee feedback loops that lead to measurable action. Great Place To Work Certification benchmarks your culture against Australia’s best workplaces and provides data to identify the specific gaps driving attrition in your organisation.

How does Great Place To Work measure tech company culture?

The Trust Index survey comprises 60 statements on a five-point scale plus two open-ended questions, measuring employee experience across leadership credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie. Companies scoring 65 per cent or above earn Certification. Best Workplaces in Technology are selected from Certified organisations based entirely on employee feedback, ensuring the recognition reflects what people experience rather than what companies claim.

Why should my tech company get Great Place To Work Certified?

Certified companies have outperformed the stock market by a factor of three over 28 years and experience significantly lower turnover than industry averages. Certification provides benchmarked culture data to guide people strategy, a globally recognised employer brand credential used in recruitment campaigns, and automatic eligibility for all Best Workplaces lists. For tech companies competing for scarce talent, the Certification badge signals to candidates that your people endorsed the culture through confidential survey responses.
